VLC Server Preferences Settings

1. Set up the http interface details in the VLC server application. Open VLC then select Settings > Preferences. Click on the Advanced Settings button in the lower right hand corner of the dialog box to see all the options that are available.

2. In the left hand window click on the + button next to Interface. This will display three choices. Control interfaces, Hotkeys settings, and Main Interfaces. Click on the plus button next to Main interfaces. This will display four settings HTTP, RC, Skins, wxWidgets. Click on HTTP to dispaly the “HTTP remote control interface settings”.

To start the VLC application in a server mode with the http interface automatically set, use the following command line in your desktop shortcut. This assumes the default location for installation was selected.

“C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe” –extraintf http –intf wx

Testing the Interface

From another computer, connect to the VLC server computer using your browser to the URL

http://server_ip_address:8080, such as http://192.168.0.186:8080

The Main VLC Interface page will be displayed,

See Web_Interface for additional information

VLC Plugin for Internet Explorer

This section will provide guidelines to incorporate the VLC ActiveX plugin to be used to view streaming audio and video from a VLC server.

How to embed the ActiveX Plugin in a Web Page: ActiveX/HTML

Supported ActiveX Function Calls: ActiveX

VLC Plugin for Firefox (Mozilla)

The Mozilla plugin (Excerpted from the VLC User Guide)

Install

There are at least two ways to install the VLC Mozilla Plugin. One way is to to check the “Install Firefox Plugin” when you install VLC.

If the standard exe installation does not install the mozilla plugin directory then download zip version which includes the required data and continue with the next installation (2nd way of installing of the plugin)

The second way involves several steps:

1. Quit Firefox or Mozilla

2. Copy the two files in VLC_Installation_folder\mozilla (usually C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\mozilla) to your mozilla plugins directory (Usually C:\Program Files\Mozilla\plugins or C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins).

3. Restart Firefox or Mozilla

Use the plugin

If you open a link to a video file handled by the VLC plugin (To get the list of handled types, browse to about:plugins) or a page with an embedded video, the plugin should open and read the video.

Build HTML pages that use the plugin (VLC version > 0.8.5)

Check the WebPlugin documentation for information on the Javascript API. It’s substantially changed since v0.8.5.

Build HTML pages that use the plugin (VLC version up to 0.8.5)

Additionally to viewing video on all pages, you can build custom pages that will use the advanced features of the plugin, using Javascript functions to control playback or extract information from the plugin.

A web browser is defined as a software application used for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web or Internet. A web page, image, video and other similar pieces of content are considered information resources. They are identified by a URI (Uniform Resource Identifier). Internet users are able to view these information resources due to hyperlinks that are present.

An example of a URI (Uniform Resource Identifier) is http://www.codank.com. HTTP stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol. The prefix of the URI determines what resource to retrieve over the HTTP.

Even though web browsers are meant to access the World Wide Web, they can also retrieve specific information by web servers in private networks or files in file systems.

Major Web Browsers Used by Most Internet Visitors

Internet Explorer – founded in 1995
Mozilla Firefox – debuted in 1998
Apple Safari – established January 2003
Google Chrome – debuted in September 2008
Opera – founded in 1996

Certain web browsers also support a variety of other prefixes, such as https:, ftp: (file transfer protocol), and file: (for local files).

Basic Web Browser User Interface Elements

Back and forward buttons
Search Bar
Address Button
Home Button
Refresh Button
Reload Button
Status Bar

Web site designers should make sure that a web site is capable of correctly functioning in different types of web browsers. A few aspects of a site may not work the way you intend it to work if it isn’t web browser capable.

Internet Download Manager 5.19 build 3 (IDM) is a tool to increase download speeds by up to 5 times, resume and schedule downloads. Comprehensive error recovery and resume capability will restart broken or interrupted downloads due to lost connections, network problems, computer shutdowns, or unexpected power outages. Simple graphic user interface makes IDM user friendly and easy to use.Internet Download Manager has a smart download logic accelerator that features intelligent dynamic file segmentation and safe multipart downloading technology to accelerate your downloads. Unlike other download managers and accelerators Internet Download Manager segments downloaded files dynamically during download process and reuses available connections without additional connect and login stages to achieve best acceleration performance.

Internet Download Manager supports proxy servers, ftp and http protocols, firewalls, redirects, cookies, authorization, MP3 audio and MPEG video content processing. IDM integrates seamlessly into Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape, MSN Explorer, AOL, Opera, Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Firebird, Avant Browser, MyIE2, and all other popular browsers to automatically handle your downloads. You can also drag and drop files, or use Internet Download Manager from command line. Internet Download Manager can dial your modem at the set time, download the files you want, then hang up or even shut down your computer when it’s done.

Other features include multilingual support, zip preview, download categories, scheduler pro, sounds on different events, HTTPS support, queue processor, html help and tutorial, enhanced virus protection on download completion, progressive downloading with quotas (useful for connections that use some kind of fair access policy or FAP like Direcway, Direct PC, Hughes, etc.), built-in download accelerator, and many others.

Version 5.19 adds IDM download panel for web-players that can be used to download flash videos from sites like YouTube, MySpaceTV, and Google Videos. It also features complete Windows 7 and Vista support, YouTube grabber, redeveloped scheduler, and MMS protocol support. The new version also adds improved integration for IE and IE based browsers, redesigned and enhanced download engine, the unique advanced integration into all latest browsers, improved toolbar, and a wealth of other improvements and new features.

There are many options available from word processing software to sound converting programmes. There are opportunities available to make a donation, this can be any amount chosen by you and is worthwhile doing to help fund these well developed programmes.

Here is the top five downloads:

OpenOffice.org

This is a great free download and supports Microsoft Windows files. You can word process, create spreadsheets, create brochures etc… The best part is that you can turn documents into PDF formats with just a click of a button all completely free. This is a very highly recommended download especially if you do not want to pay large amounts for PDF converting software or expensive word processing programmes.

Mozilla Firefox

Mozilla Firefox web browser is a must download. It is fast, secure and offers the easiest use of web browsing out there. It has come out top of all web browsers in many top lists of the major browsers including Internet Explorer. It is can be completely customised to suit your tastes. Once you have used it all other web browsers just seem poor on reflection. There is also a great host of add on’s to choose from to make your web browsing even better.

Miro Video Player

Miro offers a fantastic viewing experience; you can view videos in HD and in any format. It offers a really good interface and is simple to use, so much better than Windows media player and all of those other standard issue programmes. Like most open source software it is free to download. A must download even if just for the HD quality it offers.

GIMP

This is a photo editing software suite which in some instances rivals’ features found on Photoshop. It is simple to use and you can layer just like expensive editing software, great for designers and editing your photos to get rid of red eye and colouring to get the right balance.

FileZilla

I use this all of the time, it is a great FTP (file transfer protocol) programme and is available in both client and server options. It is as good as anything I have ever used. It is used for transferring files to your server uploading to the internet.

A great solution for any individual or company who which to upload files to internet servers, both dedicated and reseller.

It is very simple to use and just proves that open source software really is worth investigating and downloading.

Mozilla Thunderbird

An open source email application that makes storing and sorting your emails a breeze. If you are used to using Mozilla Firefox internet browser then this is the option for you. It is fully customisable like the browser and allows you to open tabs and keep your email system easy and quick.

It also features advanced spam filtering systems to stop unwanted emails and archiving emails is so simple and effective.

Open source software really is something you must be looking at and not just because it is free. Open source software is continually updated so you are always using the newest and safest version; this is something that you normally have to pay for with paid software.

Recently EU regulations has ordered that Microsoft offer a choice of web browsers, so this means that anyone buying a new computer will have the choice of using the following instead of having to use the pre-installed Internet Explorer.

Mozilla Firefox
Safari
Google Chrome
Opera
Internet Explorer

All of the above web browsers are now an option for new users however they have always been available as a free download its just with Microsoft’s dominance not many users have known a lot about them.

Safari will be known to all Apple Mac users as this is traditionally the pre-installed browser. Safari is also available to Windows users again as a free download.

My advice to anyone looking at web browsers is to download and test all of them as it really is a personal preference, in a recent study of web browsers Mozilla Firefox came out on top and Internet Explorer last.

As with any software all web browsers differ, some are quicker than other, some offer options such as quick bookmarking and customisable looks. One of the big plus points of any web browser is security, the securest for me is Mozilla Firefox as any problems seem to be fixed very quickly without the user ever really knowing.

Please do test all of the web browsers as the downloads are completely free and you may just find a better alternative to the one you are currently using. My recommendation is Mozilla Firefox as this for me offers such a wide range of choice to the user as well as speed and security, however that is just my preference as others browsers can be simpler and faster depending on your own browsing needs.

Once again, it’s time for me to publish a few of the e-mails that have arrived in my inbox this week.

Mozilla is becoming well known for its Firefox browser and Thunderbird e-mail client, but its Sunbird calendar is less well known. Put simply, it is a clone of the calendar in Microsoft Office but it is completely free and worth a look for anyone who wants an office calendar program without the expense of buying Microsoft Office.

Ian MacMillan, by E-mail

Well spotted Ian. Despite being free of charge and still in the early stages of its development, Mozilla Sunbird is a worthy download for people in need of a simple to use calendar application for their PC without having to purchase Microsoft Office.

The idea of the calendar will be for it to work across multiple platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux etc) as it works using the XUL user interface language provided by a number of applications such as Mozilla Firefox. As a result of this interdependency you will be required to have one of the free programs from the Mozilla suite installed such as Firefox or Thunderbird which I have reviewed before in the past.

To download the Mozilla Calendar just go to www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/ and if you don’t already have Firefox head to www.mozilla.org – Both downloads are extremely small and free of charge.

If you are interested in the other projects that our friends at Mozilla are working on then take a minute to visit http://www.mozilla.org/projects/ – In all honesty a lot of their other creations and projects may not be of interest to the typical computer user as most of it is for developers but there are certainly a limited amount of applications to browse.

Having downloaded AVG Anti-Virus as suggested in one of your previous articles I am now getting lots of pop up ads when visiting a site – Should this be happening?

Andrea Winnchild, by E-mail

One thing that you should have learnt from me by now is that I’ll never recommend that you download a program that will also expose the user to pop-up adverts and Spyware.

This problem is most likely being caused by a piece of devious Ad or Spyware that has snuck onto your machine and it is simply a coincidence that it was installed at roughly the same time as good old AVG free. To sort out the issue I recommend visiting the Microsoft (www.microsoft.com) website and download their own Anti-Spyware utility or download Spybot Search and Destroy (http://security.kolla.de) which are both great little apps to get rid of such annoyances on your system. For more information on these programs head over to the Computer Articles website and take a look at one of my many articles on the topic.

While on the subject of removing unwanted trash from your computer I may as well mention the CCleaner utility I covered a few weeks back that is made to remove outdated files and registry entries from your system has been redesigned and fully updated. This is certainly a worthwhile application for most users who wish to clean up their system which can be downloaded free of charge by heading to www.ccleaner.com. Once again, a full review is available at www.computerarticles.co.uk.

PAGE LOAD TIME: Here, Mozilla leads with an average time of just 1.34 seconds followed by Google Chrome (1.45 seconds ).
BROWSER CACHE PERFORMANCE Here Firefox and Chrome are tied at 0.73 seconds.
ADD-ONS : Who doesnt want his/her browser to look stylish ? Or have shortcuts to links and ease of finding the origin of an image. Add-ons do the job. In this category, Mozilla Firefox leads with 1,494,045,834 add-ons available online of all types.
THEMES: Here, those at no.3,4 and 5 dont have much to talk about, but Chrome and Firefox have a large gallery of themes. In Google Chrome, there are a variety of themes created by Google or any anonymous person. Firefox too provides many choices.

Though its not been long since CHROME was introduced, Chrome has made a good place for itself amongst the competitors in web browsing, Google sure will work hard on keeping it atleast in the top 2 positions.

Whereas in the case of FIREFOX, Firefox has been created by Mozilla, a global community created in 1998 to help make internet a better place. Adding to that, Mozilla is a non-profit organisation.

Overall, to simplify, and not get confused in the whole topic of which browser should be downloaded and used, i say: if you want a very light browser with fast page loading time, Google Chrome is a good choice. But if you dont care downloading a little extra amount of data (setup file of Firefox is larger), Mozilla Firefox is the best(according to me), with very high speeds and loads to explore.

Google Chrome is one of the fastest browsers available for the user that is available as a Free download software by google. It is capable of automatically detecting the Web browser that is already installed in the pc and guides the user through the process of installing it and importing the settings and bookmarks from the previous browser. It can even import the saved username and passwords, which it automatically populates when that particular site is visited.

After getting through with the import process Google Chrome initializes and lets you browse the net immediately. The layout of google chrome is very simple with a row of tabs running along the top, and a n address bar like other browsers, with a bookmarks bar which has been placed under the address bar.

Like the other softwares Google has offered, this browser too has a very minimalistic interface. A full-scale menu bar and title bar is absent in it and provides very few distractions. All the other controls are present under the two icons that are to the right of the address bar, with a page icon for managing tabs.

Mozilla Firefox has made a lot of notable changes in their latest update that has kept the browser up to task with the current browsing tech available on the net. Along with the improvements that have been made to the TraceMonkey JavaScript engine that has enabled this browser to render Web applications much faster, there have also been many changes that are present under the hood.

These changes include features like the ability to block various third-party softwares that can encroach on Firefox’s won file system and has resulted in increased stability. It also supports the Web Open Font Format, which means that all those non-English internet browser users would be able to load web pages faster with the help of downloadable fonts, and it also supports the File interface, which will now help the users in performing tasks like uploading multiple photos simultaneously.

The race for the internet’s fastest browser is never-ending. Recently google entered this arena with the newest browser. The Google Chrome main window features a smooth theme that easily blends with Google applications. Chrome is capable of importing settings such as book marks, saved passwords, search engines, and history from Firefox and Internet Explorer. Chrome’s own inbuilt task manager also provides an easy way to find out which browser tab is using the most bandwidth, CPU, and memory.

Thanks to its latest multiprocess architecture one can easily discard tabs and have all their resources back. Instead of a boring blank screen as a homepage one get a search bar, and it also shows the most recently visited pages and most recent bookmarks.

Many people prefer to get the newest and latest browsers to get the fastest version. Version 3.5 of Mozilla Firefox is faster than their previous version 3 and the web pages load considerably quicker. The new version has an awesome address bar which generates the URL suggestions at amazing speeds as you type in the bar. There are now some inbuilt filters also that make it more interesting. If one accidentally closes an open Firefox tab it usually couldn’t be restored in the old version.

But now one can easily restore the closed tabs thanks to the list of previously closed tabs or windows according to one’s own choice. These options can be easily found at the history menu. The new Mozilla Firefox 3.5 needed these improvements to serve as a powerful alternative browser.

Their new private mode is also of great use where security is an issue. For example in situations like buying stuff online using credit card information, any sensitive search, or a quick mail check from friend’s browser, or online bill payment etc one may find this private mode a real boon. One can easily enable or disable that mode according to the nature of work. This browser is available as Free Download software on Mozilla’s own website.

Lots of people will simply continue with web-mail clients, that offers some convenience at the expense of modification and power. For those searching for with additional control over our inboxes however, third party email clients are the way to go. Currently the best two mail clients I run into nearly all are Mozilla Thunderbird and Microsoft Outlook.

Thunderbird is free of charge, and, sometimes offers what folks are searching for. The User interface is easy and clean, the text-editor includes full variety of formatting choices, it is relatively simple to setup, and most importantly, it uses an extension program the same as Firefox. For those new to Firefox’s plug-ins, they are basically community created add-ons into the program that include or modify features. Thunderbird’s plug-ins enables you to a number of things, from establishing auto-response systems to automatically making and fully indexing an address book away from an inbox. Thunderbird is really a program of couple of weak points, though those accustomed to other e-mail clients like Microsoft Outlook or Lotus Notes Email might have difficulty switching over at first.

Outlook tends to be what comes up when many people consider the “classic” email client. Almost everyone has experienced it in most form or another, whether it be as connected with the Microsoft Office Collection or simply as the web base Outlook Express. That is a proof of the effectiveness of office; almost all people either have skilled it, or can discover ways to use it relatively quickly. Outlook is a bit less strong in features, though is comparable to, if not much better than Thunderbird in text editing/formatting options. As far as setup, Microsoft has done a great job in streamlining the set up process, and also Outlook can generally configure itself to any e-mail service. Whenever it cannot, the Microsoft tech support community is there to give assistance, covering effectively any issue that might arise.

Successfully the choice comes down to what you need; although Outlook may be simpler to use plus more friendly, if for few other reason than the plug-ins Thunderbird provides more options to the user. It can be essential to note, however, that not all people will understand or even want extensions, and therefore Outlook may be your best bet going off simpleness as the best policy.
