Internet Explorer Can be Bad For Your Computer’s Health

Posted by the tech on Apr 30, 2010 in Browser |

Today we are going to talk a bit about Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer is the world’s most popular Internet browser. This is mainly attributed to the fact that it comes with your computer’s operating system and many do not realize they have a choice about which browser they use or how dangerous to your computer’s well being just using Internet Explorer can be.

Until the release of version 8, Internet Explorer did not conform to web standards and creators of web sites would have to tweak their sites so that the sites would work when pulled up in Internet Explorer. With the creation of Internet Explorer 8 came some conforming to Internet standards and the passing of the Acid2 test, but not the Acid3 test.

Internet Explorer has some other problems as well. The most serious of these is the security holes. The fact that malicious programs can install themselves on your system if you visit the wrong web page is a very serious problem. Microsoft has been made aware of the problems, and have made a few updates to address some of these problems, but not all of them. The drive by installations of malicious software like spyware and viruses is something you need to be wary of and keep an eye out for if you use Internet Explorer. The most common one being used today is a window that looks like a Windows warning or error telling you that your computer is infected and asking if you would like to run a free scan now. This is a trick. If the scan runs, you are infected. If you click the box at all you are infected. When faced with this window it is best just to ctrl + alt+ delete, go to your task manager and end the task on that window. The reason this is such a problem with Internet Explorer is because they have no safe guards against this kind of attack while other web browsers do. In fact these attacks are written with Internet Explorer in mind.

If you must use Internet Explorer, then by all means keep it up to date. Use the most recent version and keep your Windows updated. Windows updates will have what fixes Microsoft makes for Internet Explorer. Another thing you must do while using Internet Explorer is use a registry cleaner. With all the malicious code out there your registry will be affected and you will start receiving errors, which a good registry cleaner will clear up for you.
