Whether your old computer is shot or you have never bought a computer on your own before, you may be feeling a little bit nervous about the whole thing.

Buying a computer represents putting down a fair chunk of your hard earned money, and you may be nervous about getting a computer that isn’t a great fit for your needs.

The truth is, getting a good desktop computer that suits you is easier than you think, and by simply keeping the following tips in mind, you’ll be able to find the perfect computer that will keep you happy for years to come.

1. Know what you want your computer for.

Think about how you use your computer. Are you someone who only uses a computer for its word processing ability, or do you prefer to stay up to date on the latest games.

Maybe you are someone whose entertainment is largely focused around your computer; all of your communication and your movies are kept on your computer. By keeping a clear idea of what you need your computer for, you will be able to get the right machine.

2. Know what RAM is.

RAM stands for Random Access Memory, and you will find that what it does is affect the speed with which your computer “thinks,” that is, processes action. If you are only using your computer for things like surfing online or writing, you’ll find that a RAM of 512 MB is okay, though 1GB is ideal.

You’ll find that this size will give you room to expand or grow if you want to later on, but that it’s not so big that you are wasting your money. If you are going to be gaming, or doing advanced computer programming with your unit,, you will of course want more.

3. Don’t worry so much about hard drive space.

Your hard drive space generally refers to the amount of information that you can keep on your computer, ranging from written work to audio and visual media.

You’ll find that if you download a lot of videos that this can be eaten up fast, but in desktops, you’ll find that it is very easy to add some more. Remember that while you do have a finite amount of space that it is all in how you use it.

4. Online or from the store?

You’ll find that ordering online is actually a lot cheaper, but keep in mind that you should have a clue about what you are looking it. If you choose to build a computer yourself, you’ll find that it is much easier to get the parts online.

At a store, though, you will find that you can often take the time to look over the specs, speak with a sales representative and take a look around to see what else is available. It really depends on what you are comfortable with.

If you are looking to buy a desktop computer, remember that you really need to think about what you want it for. Once you have the function decided upon, it is very easy to figure out what machine will be perfect for you.

Linux is an “open source” operating system originally developed by a engineer from Finland named Linus Torvalds. Linux was released under an early version of the GNU “General Public License”, or GPL, by which any user that wanted to work with Linux was free to do so. Though it has evolved considerably over the years, it has yet to eclipse the popularity of Microsoft’s Windows operating system at the consumer and small business level- which is dominated by “desktop” computer sales.

Sun, IBM and HP all have produced servers that utilize Linux – and it is in the server – database environment that Linux has thrived since its inception. The two major software companies that have produced successive versions of Linux software are Novell and Red Hat, both of which have taken an open source (free) operating system and equipped it with a variety of software packages tailored to various requirements, in order to create proprietary products.

While Linux based systems drive some cell phones and can be found in ordinary PCs, the primary competition between Red Hat and Novell has been in the “enterprise space,” that segment of the software universe which focuses on linking business users to databases. Now, Red Hat has announced its intention to move into the “business desktop” market with a new series of adaptations. According to Red Hat, “This will be a more comprehensive offering that will target markets like the small and medium-sized business [SMB] sector and emerging markets. Part of this strategy is to get the desktop more to the masses than our existing client is getting today.”

In the war of press releases, Novell claims to have made these strides already, and that what Red Hat is defining as desktop functionality is really an expansion of business functions – which Novell claims to have achieved already. And indeed, a spokesman for Red Hat notes that the company has “no plans to go and sell this offering at Best Buy… [for]…the mass consumer market. Customers will be able to download it and get a Red Hat Network subscription on the Web for it, which is what we feel is the distribution wave of the future anyway…”

So how do home users that venture into the Linux world feel about it? Many of them who have blogged about it feel that it’s the greatest operating system out there but it is not ready for mass consumption simply because too many ancillary software elements and computer appendages aren’t adapted for it. One self described “geek” who uses Linux, Windows Vista AND XP finds Linux to be a great operating system for browser use, but a simple task like hooking up a printer to a Linux driven PC can be a real challenge.

He adds, “If you’re accustomed to watching DVDs, Windows Media or QuickTime files on your computer, then you’re in for a challenge. Most Linux distributions (at least the major ones anyway) don’t include this functionality by default because the codecs (software that displays the various encoded video file formats like Windows Media) aren’t free. In many cases they’re downright illegal. The same situation exists with MP3, arguably the most popular format for audio (notably audio you rip from your CD collection).”

It’s a great operating system, but plug-and-play functionality for home computers isn’t there yet. And neither Red Hat nor Novell have any intention of invading the home consumer “space.” For now, they’re content to battle it out by expanding their business-based products.

Over the years computers have definitely moved from being a luxury to being a necessity. This machine has proved its reliability to where many companies and people depend on it to perform tasks and duties. This technology is responsible for the innovations that have proliferated in past and recent years and that will continue to flourish in the future. In order for you to be able to use it, you don’t even need to understand what goes inside your computer hardware. Here is a brief look about the subject, if you’d like to know its components.

They are some of the things that make up the hardware side of a PC.

To find out how fast your system will run, you need to look at the Central Processing Unit (CPU), the RAM and the Hard Disk Drive. If you are searching for something with value these days, it would be better to pick CPUs that have a Dual or Quad Core than an ancient version with a Single Core since this is more slow than the recent versions.

Motherboard: This is where all the other hardware on the computer connects, and allows each to communicate with each other. This is what the essential components are connected to. All of the computer parts are included in this. It is not worth saving a couple dollars to buy lower quality and unknown brands on key components for the system.

Hard Disk Drive: Anyone who has installed programs and music on their computer system is probably aware of this component. The more storage that a drive has, the greater number of files and programs can be saved on it. The files are yours to keep for as long as you want. Just for your peace of mind that your memory will still be able to take it. Unnecessary files and programs can be removed if your disk space is already running low. There are two options: upgrade your drive or start using external devices like removable flash drives or memory cards.

Data from the computer itself is stored on the Ram for a temporary period. The CPU performs faster by its help. Once a computer’s power source is cut off, all of the information that was stored in RAM disappears.

The images you see on your monitor are displayed in large part due to your graphics card. More and more changes are being made in this area of computers as well because of the number of active gamers out there.

Purchasing computer hardware can be a difficult task. Even with computers an integral part of our lives, we can never stop learning new information about computers. Most people do not understand computers. Most people don’t understand the components that actually run the computer.

When you lack computer knowledge, it is difficult to purchase hardware. If you don’t know what you want to buy, then how hard would it be to make a purchase? You need to make sure all the information is in front of you. Follow this advice when buying a computer.

Do not replace all the components.

Ascertaining the region inducing equipment failure is the first matter to attend to while purchasing computer hardware. When you are in the store you will know what to buy. It’s good to know what you need to purchase because you won’t buy things you don’t need. You will find that unless you have an older computer, problems tend to come singularly with parts breaking down one at a time.

Make an effort to locate more favorable prices.

Today, since the economy is so bad, companies now offer lower prices to remove items from the shelves and from stock. At times, the hunt for better prices takes a while, so keep a patient mind and attitude. Computers go on sale yearly, so if time is not an issue, it may be prudent to just wait for the sale. If you’re looking for a great deal on computer parts or electronic items, visit stores that have scheduled sales.

You must know what you are going to deal with.

You should always know what you’re buying before you reach the store. This will make you a better haggler, and you will know which parts to buy.

Checking features on what you are buying is important, knowing each of them will assist when discussing the parts and options. Talking to other people as various articles are some of the ways to get to know your computer better. If you have a computer question, ask! It can assist a person with a shopping spree.

Just because you aren’t an expert on computers, it doesn’t mean you can’t choose correctly after learning the basics and some tips. Read on to find out how to buy this desktop wonder.

You can physically take apart and fix any problems you might have with the hardware on your computer. However, if you have problems with the operating system or any computer programs that are installed, you can only attempt to fix the problem through prompts you receive on your computer screen. In contains the processor which is responsible for data processing; the hard disk drive that serves as the storage space for pictures and files; the RAM (Random Access Memory), that takes care of various tasks and maintains the smooth shape of the processes, the sound and graphics cards that let you possess clear photos in addition to sounds you’ll like; the motherboard, where all the parts are spread out and certainly the modem, for internet connection.

If you are in the market for computer hardware, it is necessary to first determine which components you require. Do this if you’re trying to fix a part of a computer, as opposed to buying a new one. Doing this gives you the chance to add to your savings. After all, everything else works like it should

Shopping will not be a problem when you know what computer hardware you are going to buy. When working within a tight budget, it would be hard to to purchase the entire thing. You need to look at your budget. What is the most you are ready to pay for this particular component? However, some people canvass first and look at the specifications. There are many different sizes in hardware for many different things. When purchasing a computer you should see what you need the computer for so you don’t buy one you don’t need. An individual with a high amount of computer files obviously needs more disk room in their computer in order to store the files. A more advanced or greater quality graphic card is a necessity for a photographer. Depending on the requirements is what you can you use the computer for.

Deciding what kind of computer software to purchase can get to be quite complicated. It is not as simple as purchasing clothes. Once you have found out the size you are ready to proceed. Of course it isn’t as easy as grocery shopping. If you know the expiration date, you are prepared. Some might think that fixing or replacing computer hardware is simple, but it can be much harder than it looks. You need to also look at their performance, storage capacity, compatibility along with the size and brand of the other hardware in your computer. Purchasing a computer is complicated, so you should always solicit reputable guidance.

Before you buy any computer component, you need to know this.

There are so many different kinds of computer hardware. Some contribute to the performance of the computer, whereas others are utilized to store information. Make sure you get all the parts you need for a computer build. All will need to be purchased so you will not run into a problem if you plan to purchase the entire thing. You may need a few things replaced if your computer is acting laggy.

You should be aware of how much various parts are supposed to cost you. You should definitely try to bargain for a better price of purchase. If you don’t have a general price point to go by, you have no idea what kind of a deal you are getting. If you don’t know the price of something you want to buy maybe you should check for the price online. There are even site’s that will show you the price’s in different store’s. This way you’ll know the best places to get a good deal.

When buying computer hardware, you must consider the specifications and performances needed. As an example, hard drives with larger capacities are important. The bigger the memory the more power the computer will have. You will need a new processor that is up to date This is the most efficient in the group. You need to check to see if your computer over heats on a daily basis so there are no problems in the future.

But even though you can read about these online, it’s always good to ask people in the real-world too. Having help is always great to have.

As a business consultant, web designer and photographer my technical know-how around doing system administration on my Microsoft desktop is limited and sometimes I do require the assistant of my computer engineering son to get it right. In a Microsoft Environment, keeping updated with respect to potential security breaches and patches is a constant vigil. The rigor of keeping current with OS updates, Norton updates and Spyware updates is time consuming. Valuable business hours each week are spend and lost on this task of self-administration dictated by the Microsoft Operating Environment.

So with the purchase of an IBM T40 (a tough notebook), increasing system administration time was not an option. This alone forced an serious consideration of Linux as an alternative operating environment. That was five years ago. Now an established Linux user, I can clearly profess the capabilities and benefits of Linux for small and large businesses, especially, when it comes to notebook deployment.

What Linux variant is best for small business and notebook deployment in your company?

As a small and medium business development manager with Sun Microsystems, exposure to Linux and the debate around its viability was a daily event. Questioning and challenging the virtues of Open Source (FREE) Linux versus Licensed Linux versions like Red Hat and Novell SuSE continues to this day . After years of personal use of Open Source (Free) Linux, I can never go back to running the Microsoft Operating Environment on my notebook. And once you can get Linux versions of Quick books, Quick Tax and Picasa (now available on Linux), there is no reason to stay in that perpetual administrative nightmare world of Microsoft.

Having successfully deployed two Open Source Linux variants on my IBM T40 notebook over the last 5 years, a compelling comparison can be made between Fedora and Ubuntu. Fedora, the Open Source version of Red Hat, required the installation expertise of some Linux gurus from Belleville Ontario. It worked fine, but required some Linux ninja system administration every 6-9 months. Administration items applied during these visits included upgrades to Open Office (the open source version of Star Office), Linux OS fixes and new peripheral drivers. This, again, turned out to be a drain on my scarce time for doing real business.

Now the Linux called Ubuntu is installed on my notebook. Ubuntu by Canonical is a full Open Source Linux based on Debian Linux. Ubuntu is now available on Dell systems and Federal Governments are adding this Linux operating environment to their list of standard available OS’s for all desktop and notebook computers.

Right out of the gate, Ubuntu was simple to install. You could even bring down a trial copy to experience exactly how it would behave on your notebook before downloading and committing the Ubuntu OS environment to your machine. But the best part is that Ubuntu continuously keeps on top of OS and all related application software updates. Ubuntu has an Update Manager that magically appears in desktop tool bar. And with a simple click (and password) you are kept current on the latest versions of Ubuntu patches, any Linux application software you have installed from Canonical and Open Office upgrades.

With Linux rebooting your machine after an update is nearly non-existent.

Oh, as an added treat with Ubuntu, Ubuntu boots up on your machine in less than a minute. I still go get a coffee when my Microsoft desktop is booting up. An additional benefit of Ubuntu: there is no requirement for installing ant-virus and anti-spyware software. Ubuntu inherently repels these vial scourges of the internet.

With Ubuntu your system administration life will become simple and painless. You can spend more quality business hours selling and marketing.

Want to cut hidden costs in your organization that manifest themselves as Microsoft self-administration by your end users?

Ubuntu is a must for you or your IT folks to consider. Seriously consider, test and deploy.
