The Recycle Bin. Has been with the various Windows operating systems since at least Windows 3.0. Most people put in their files for deletion, yet may not have it set to empty. This is fine and does no harm, yet over time you will have files accumulate that you believe you have removed in the past. Those files have not become removed or deleted, they are just out of sight hence out of mind.

This is easily resolved, if you have items in your recycle bin, check it now and if you are sure you want to delete these files, right click on the bin and select empty recycle bin. Alternatively you can right click on the icon on the desktop, select properties and click the radio button for – Do not move files to the recycle bin. Remove files immediately when deleted. Also if you want, check on the green tick for – Display delete confirmation dialog. That way you know you will be prompted to double check if you really want to delete that file before removal, if you change your mind, simply click on the cancel button.

If you are having problems using the icon on the desktop, in the search bar on Vista and Windows 7 or the cmd.exe file in Windows 95/98/2000/ME and XP, start the command prompt from the start menu and use the one of either two of the following commands.

del C:\RECYCLER\?*.*) or try

ATTRIB C:\RECYCLER\* -R -S -H /S /D
DEL C:\RECYCLER\* /F /S /Q
RD C:\RECYCLER /S /Q

If you are missing the actual icon, desktop properties for the recycle bin may have changed. To restore it for Windows 95/98/2000/ME and XP do the following

Right click your desktop and selecting properties. On the window that appears, select the desktop tab, then click customize desktop. On the next window, select recycle bin (full) and click restore default, then repeat with recycle bin (empty).

To restore it for Windows Vista & 7 do the following

Right click your desktop and selecting personalize. On the window that appears, select the desktop tab, click once on change desktop icons, click the white box once to show a tick next to the recycle bin name.

Using these helpful tips will easily resolve the most common problems when using this resource or finding that the icon for some reason has disappeared form the desktop.

              <!– @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } A:link { so-language: zxx } –>

Are you unable to boot your Windows 7 or Windows Vista operating system-based computer, after making it dual-boot with an earlier version of Windows operating system? Do you encounter error when your system tries to read disk? This behavior of Windows may occur due to various compatibility issues and make your system unusable. At this point, you can not access your hard drive partitions and encounter partition loss situations. In order to recover lost partitions in such circumstances, Windows Data Recovery is required.

As a practical example, you may come below issues after installing an earlier version of MS Windows on a Windows Vista or Windows 7-based machine in dual-boot configuration:

Windows Vista does not boot after making your system dual-boot. Only earlier version of Windows boots up.

When you install an extra instance of Windows XP on a system, which has Windows Vista and Windows XP in dual-boot configuration, the below error message occurs.
“Disk read error has occurred.”

This behavior make your system inaccessible. To recover lost partitions in such cases, it becomes essential to find the cause of this problem and perform Windows Data Recovery by sorting it out.

Reason

This behavior of Windows operating system occurs as earlier versions of MS Windows are not compatible with Windows Vista boot method. Vista employs a new BCD (Boot Configuration Database) store. The BCD includes a boot menu and the information about the operating system, which are installed on your computer. Thus, the Boot.ini file which is from earlier version of Windows can not be used for booting up Windows Vista.

Resolution

You can try out the following things to work around this problem:

Use the Bootsect.exe for restoring Windows Vista Master Boot Record (MBR) and boot code, which transfers control to Windows Boot Manager (WBM) program.

Use Bcdedit.exe for creating a manual entry in BCD Boot.ini file in earlier version of Windows.

Reboot your system.

If the above method does not work, you need to format your hard drive and reinstall Windows Vista. In this case, you will lose all your hard drive partitions and need to Recover Partitions.

The make it quite easy to retrieve lost hard drive partitions. The software are able to handle all types of partition loss situations, using advanced scanning methods.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is the best made software that provides assured recovery of lost Windows partitions. It recovers FAT16, FAT32, VFAT, NTFS, and NTFS5 file system partitions. The software is designed for Microsoft Windows 7, Vista, 2003, XP, and 2000.

In Microsoft Windows operating system, you can use startup disk for booting your system using a disk, instead of hard drive. You can use startup disk for fixing problems that may develop in your Windows computer. The startup disk can be used in various situations where your system can not boot up or some critical data structures get damaged. It helps you to gain access of your hard drive partitions and prevent need of Partition Recovery solutions.

The startup disk of Windows operating system can access a hard drive, which has the FAT (File Allocation Table) or NTFS (New Technology File System) file system partitions. It can be useful to sort out the below startup issues in Microsoft Windows operating system:

Damaged MBR (Master Boot Record)
Corrupted Startup Sector
Corrupted or Missing Ntdetect.com or NTLDR
Virus Infection
Incorrect Ntbootdd.sys Driver

The startup disk can also be used for booting your system from shadow copy of the broken mirror. But, you need to modify the Boot.ini file on Windows hard drive to do this.

However, sometimes the startup disk can not help you to fix the startup problems in Windows system and may give you the below error when trying to fix any problem:

“Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem. Could not read from selected startup disk. Check startup path and disk hardware. Please check the Windows (TM) documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information. Boot Failed.”

Furthermore, you cannot use Windows startup disk for resolving the following issues:
Damaged or incorrect device drivers, which are installed in Windows System folder
. Startup issues, which occur after OSLOADER screen.

In order to fix such issues, load last known good configuration or reinstall Windows operating system. Reinstalling the Windows operating system removes all the data from primary partition or entire hard drive and need Windows Partition Recovery to sort out the problem.

You can Recover Partition through the help of Partition Recovery Software in a quick and perfect way.

Introduction:

Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) is light years ahead of its predecessors, but by no means does that proclamation mean that the browser is perfect. You are still going to encounter issues with IE from time to time.

Here are some of the concise guides that deliver some troubleshooting steps that will clear up the majority of issues we encountered with IE7.

Issues with Internet Explorer 7.0 with solutions

Problem: Crashes or hangs

If IE crashes, the most likely problem is that there’s a buggy add-on (Toolbar or Browser Helper Object). In order to verify and isolate the buggy add-on, follow these steps:

Start IE in No Add-ons mode, either by right-clicking the Desktop icon, or clicking START | RUN and typing: iexplore.exe -extoff Determine if IE fails. If not, use Tools | Manage Add-ons to disable all browser extensions and toolbars. Restart IE and re-enable browser extensions one-by-one. Once you’ve found a broken extension, contact the manufacturer and ask for an update.

(Reference: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=928426)

If IE still crashes often, even when browser add-ons are disabled:

Please ensure that you are running the very latest version of your anti-virus, anti-malware, and/or firewall programs. Please ensure that the drivers for your graphics card are up to date. If you have Google Desktop installed, please ensure that you update to the latest version of Google Desktop. If you have 7-Zip or other Windows Explorer extensions installed, please ensure that you update to the latest.

Problem: Cannot connect to Internet using IE after updates installed

If you see the “Page Cannot be Displayed” error after installing Internet Explorer updates from Windows Updates, it’s possible that you have a 3rd party firewall installed that is blocking access because the IE files have been updated. Please see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942818/en-us for more information.

Problem: IE always starts in “No Add-ons” mode

The problem is that you’re launching Internet Explorer using a shortcut icon that has the “-extoff” command line parameter. That parameter causes IE to start without add-ons. Thus, every time you use that shortcut icon, IE will start in No Add-ons Mode.

How do you normally start Internet Explorer? Right-click whatever icon you’re using to start IE, choose “Properties” and remove the -extoff part of the shortcut. If you click the green START button, click Run, type iexplore.exe in the RUN box, then hit the ENTER key, IE will start with Addons enabled.

Problem: IE opens small windows

IE opens new windows at the size of the last closed window. If you find that IE is opening small windows, do this:

Close all IE windows. Open one new IE window. Adjust that window to the size you prefer. Do this by dragging the window borders. Do not use the maximize button: Close the IE window. New IE windows will open at the size you chose.

Problem: ClearType Text appears fuzzy

IE7 turns on a text-smoothing technology called “ClearType” by default. ClearType is scientifically proven to make text easier to read, particularly on LCD flat panel monitors.

If ClearType looks fuzzy on your monitor, you might want to try the ClearType tuning wizard, which can help you adjust the display of ClearType.

If you still don’t like the appearance of ClearType, you can turn it off by unchecking the checkbox: Tools | Internet Options | Advanced | Multimedia | Always use ClearType for HTML.

Problem: IE Startup takes a long time (>3 seconds)

1. IE may start very slowly if you have a huge number of sites listed in your Restricted or Trusted sites zone. Some tools, like “SpyBot Search & Destroy” will place thousands of sites in these zones if you use their “immunize” feature.

2. Follow the “Crashing on startup” steps above to see if starting in No Add-ons mode starts much faster

3. If you’re not using a proxy, uncheck IE’s “Automatically detect settings” option on the Tools | Internet Options | Connections | LAN Settings dialog.

Problem: Slow Page rendering

1. Increase the connection limit. This tweak allows IE to make up to 16 connections per server.

2. Ensure that both “HTTP1.1″ checkboxes in Tools | Internet Options | Advanced are checked.

Problem: IE7 Setup fails to install Internet Explorer

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917925

Problem: My address bar won’t turn green?

IE7 includes a cool new feature that turns the address bar green when a secure site presents an Extended Validation certificate:

If you’re having trouble with this feature, on a site you know has an EV certificate:

Ensure that you either have the Phishing Filter set to “Automatic” mode or Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Security > Check for Server Certificate revocation checked. If that doesn’t work, install this: Windows Root Certificate Update and restart.

Problem: After installing, IE7 starts then vanishes

It’s possible that one of IE’s DLLs isn’t installed correctly

Click START | RUN and type cmd In the command prompt, type cd\ In the command prompt, type cd Program Files In the command prompt, type cd Internet Explorer In the command prompt, type regsvr32 IEPROXY.DLL

(Reference: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=928427)

Problem: Error message about PSAPI.DLL

If you install IE7 and the following error message begins to show:

The procedure entry point GetProcessImageFileNameW could not be located in the dynamic link library PSAPI.DLL

Search your hard disk for PSAPI.dll. Any copies of this DLL that are found outside of the Windows or Windows\System32 folder should be renamed to PSAPI.bak.

Problem: IE always goes to http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx instead of my homepage

If IE7 always goes to the RunOnce page on startup, even after you’ve tried to save the first run settings, it’s possible that the mechanism that IE is using to save the settings does not work for some reason.

You can prevent IE from going to the RunOnce page and cause it to go directly to your homepage by running this script.

For more info, check out this Knowledge Base article.]

Problem: IE always goes to http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx instead of my homepage

If Internet Explorer always goes to this page on startup, it’s likely that you have an anti-spyware package (like “SpyBot”) that prevented IE from correctly modifying your registry.

Try running this script. Note: you may need to disable your anti-spyware tool temporarily for the script to work.

Problem: On startup, IE always shows an error message about the AOL toolbar

If you see the following error message every time IE starts:

“Cannot find ‘file:///C:/Program Files/AOL Toolbar/welcome.html’. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct.”

…then you’ve hit a bug in the AOL Toolbar.

Try running this script. Note: you may need to disable your anti-spyware tool temporarily for the script to work.

Problem: I installed a “branded” version of IE7, but I’d prefer a “plain” copy without toolbars and customizations.

An article on this topic can be found here: How to remove branding in Internet Explorer 7.

Problem: Malware / Adware

If Internet Explorer is behaving strangely (crashing, visiting unwanted sites, etc), it’s possible that there is malicious software installed on your computer.

As a first step, you should allow your antivirus software to scan and attempt to repair your computer. Additionally, you may want to try the following Microsoft tools:

Windows Defender Windows Live OneCare Windows Live Safety Center Malicious Software Removal Tool

You should also ensure your computer has all the security updates available at Microsoft Update.

Problem: My searches are redirected to unrelated sites and I cannot connect to WindowsUpdate or antivirus websites

If Internet Explorer searches are redirected to unrelated sites or search engines, it’s possible that your computer was infected with malware (see the previous tip). However, if your computer is not currently infected with malware, it’s possible that at some time in the past, malicious software altered your computer’s DNS settings. DNS works like an “internet phonebook” that maps URLs (like “windowsupdate.microsoft.com”) to internet protocol addresses (like “207.46.225.221″).

To determine if a malicious DNS server is configured:

– Go to Start -> Control Panel ->Network Connections.
– Right click your default connection, usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection, if you are using Dial-up, and left click on Properties.
– Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item

Check to see if you’re set to something other than “Obtain DNS servers automatically“. If so, contact your ISP to ensure that the address specified is correct, or set the “Obtain DNS servers automatically” checkbox. Then restart your computer.

Problem: After opening many tabs, Windows and IE paint abnormally.

See http://blogs.msdn.com/tonyschr/archive/2005/05/25/desktop-heap-limitations.aspx

Problem: A remote user is having networking problems with Internet Explorer. How can I collect information about his system to help me to troubleshoot?

Have the user run Netcheck and send you the log file.

Problem: Overlong headers result in HTTP/4xx or HTTP/5xx errors, particularly on devices like routers or webcams

Problems of this nature are usually caused by one of the two request headers in yellow being longer than the device expects.

GET / HTTP/1.1
Accept: image/gif, image/jpeg, image/pjpeg, application/x-ms-application, application/vnd.ms-xpsdocument, application/xaml+xml, application/x-ms-xbap, application/vnd.ms-excel, application/vnd.ms-powerpoint, application/msword, application/x-shockwave-flash, application/x-silverlight, application/x-silverlight-2-b2, */*
Accept-Language: en-us
User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 6.0; WOW64; Trident/4.0; SLCC1; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; InfoPath.2; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET CLR 3.0.30618; OfficeLiveConnector.1.3; OfficeLivePatch.1.3; MS-RTC LM
Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate
Connection: Keep-Alive
Host: 192.168.10.1

These headers are dynamically generated out of registry keys. They can usually be trimmed by editing the registry without any important side-effects.

To trim the list in the Accept header, click START > RUN > REGEDIT.EXE. Using RegEdit, navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Accepted Documents

…and remove elements from the “Name/Type/Value” list to remove values that aren’t strictly required. Elements in red are of lower importance than those in black:
image/gif, image/jpeg, image/pjpeg, application/x-ms-application, application/vnd.ms-xpsdocument, application/xaml+xml, application/x-ms-xbap, application/vnd.ms-excel, application/vnd.ms-powerpoint, application/msword, application/x-shockwave-flash, application/x-silverlight, application/x-silverlight-2-b2, */*

Early up-graders to Windows Vista are reporting annoyance by the loads of software and hardware incompatibilities coming to the fore as they use Windows Vista. For the record the Redmond, Wash., software giant launched Vista and a companion update called Windows Vista Application Compatibility Update to the market on Jan 30. Seems like they expected a lot of issues with the system because they made sure that Vista patches were available on the net even before the Compact disks of the operating system left the factory.

That update, KB929427, makes good some of the more challenging application incompatibilities, but the nightmare is far from over, for the early bird upgraders. There is nothing new about

compatibility issues when a new operating system is launched, however, Vista is not only has a number of incompatibilities with existing applications but also lacks many drivers for critical hardware components and hardware peripherals. Support for Vista hardware is compounded by the fact that most vendors have not created drivers of their hardware that is compatible for Vista making support more of a headache. This is understood when it comes to peripherals such as printers and scanners but so far as critical hardware components such as hard drives, chipset controllers and video cards are concerned the lack of compatibility will crash the system. The manufacturers of primary components of the computer hardware system are just not ready with their wares to support Vista.

Early adopters of Vista have the following problems to contend with:

They will face a drastic lack of available drivers vendors leading to conflicts in applications.

New peripheral hardware components will lack compatible Vista drivers and the old components drivers will simply refuse to work in most cases.

New security feature often flags existing applications as suspicious and interrupts service

The OS automatically recommends which Vista versions is best for each PC’s configuration. This will cause small businesses to download different versions of Vista.

SO in the ultimate analysis, Vista may seem attractive in it’s packaging but it still has far to go.

Operating system commands are targeted to ease the user with respect to some tasks. But due to the incomplete knowledge and sometimes due to little reckless conduct of user, harsh data loss like problems may arise. Linux also offer a set of such commands. One of them is pmove. This is the command which interacts with the physical volumes of the system.

pmove moves the allocated physical extents on SourcePhysicalVolume to other physical volumes. The physical volumes can be more than one in number. This works by first creating the temporary logical volume so as to store all the details of the data to be tackled. Now the data is searched for contiguous nature and for each such found, an entry of new segment at the end of pmove LV is made. This acts like a mirror and the original LV is updated so as to use the new temporary segment.

After this the metadata of the volume group is updated and then the mirroring of the first part of the data is done. If the process moves in sync, the mirror is broken and into the metadata, a checkpoint is written and then the process for the next moves on. After the completion of the process, the temporary volume is removed and metadata is updated.

But this whole process comes with a flaw that whenever any interruption is encountered during this, the weird data loss situation arise, forcing you to look for Linux recovery. So this is always recommended to maintain a backup while performing the operation with this command.

Some of the users also mistakenly mix LVM and LVM2 and then fall in undesirable conditions. However, for all the users facing data loss due to such issues, data recovery industry offers a solution.

This data recovery field says that data can be recovered if no overwriting has not been performed and for Linux operating systems, Linux data recovery software is the way. These software are intended to scan the hard drive with the effective scanning algorithms and retrieve the inaccessible data.

Data recovery can be performed through the interactive interface of these software. The process is safe as these Linux recovery utilities are designed with read-only nature.

Stellar Phoenix Linux Data Recovery software proves as the ultimate product for Linux data recovery. This application works for Ext2, Ext3 and ReiserFS file systems and identifies each type of file for data recovery Linux.

You will be pleased to use the software as the application is equipped with the graphically rich user interface. The software has the ability to perform complete Linux data recovery.
