Tips For Getting Hardware To Work In Linux
When you use the Linux operating system, it is completely different than Windows. Most hardware is specifically designed for the Windows environment meaning that at times certain hardware does not seem to work well with Linux. This does not mean it will not work at all. There are some steps that you can take to make sure a piece of hardware that is not working to help get it to work.
Many expect everything to just work, but it is impossible when the hardware is not specifically designed for another system. Mac users have the exact same problem. Luckily with Linux, the kernel technically has more hardware support that the other operating systems.
The first thing that should be done is to update to the latest Linux kernel. At times hardware support is in the kernel. If your distribution is more than a few years old, consider doing an upgrade to your system to something more up to date.
Next, look for the Linux drivers for the device. Some companies made the driver or there will be third party drivers that someone has created for it. Many times these will make the device work properly.
Take the exact name and model number of the hardware you are trying to get to work and put it into a search engine asking how to make it work with Linux. This will bring up a list of forum posts that will at times have a solution to your problem giving you step by step directions or at least pointing you into the right direction.
At times it is impossible to get certain hardware to work. The manufacturer has closed off the device and makes it impossible for anyone else to port the drivers to another operating system like Linux. If you want to use Linux, you have to deal with companies that are Linux friendly and want their hardware to work on your choice of system.
